A Grade report: Celtic get the edge over Mitsy

Celtic Red has escaped with a 6 point win over Mitsy in the Ballarat Trophies and Gifts Championship season round 3 on Monday night.

After a scrappy first 3 minutes of the match Celtic managed to break away to a small 4 point lead at the half time break. Matt Johnston led Celtic in the first half with 8 points and managed to give his team a handy lead going into the second half. Read More

SEABL D-League Report: Miners make it 2 from 2 

The Ballarat D League Miners have stretched their winning streak to 12 games after beating Frankston and Sandringham on the weekend.
 
The two wins have seen the Miners remain on top of the ladder with only two games left to play. However, the minor premiership will be up for grabs when they take on second placed

VJBL Report: Miners U18 Girls move up to 7th in VJBL

The Ballarat Miners U18 women’s team have moved to seventh place on the VJBL Championship ladder after beating Bulleen by 19 points on Friday night.

VJBL Launches 'Blue Round'

Young basketball players throughout Victoria will turn blue on July 23 and 24, to raise awareness of depression, anxiety and related disorders in the sporting community. On Friday evening, 23 July, a blue round will be played totaling 467 games at over 67 venues.

The Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) and Beyondblue: the national depression initiative formed a partnership at the beginning of the 2010 Aussie Oranges Championship Season. Read More

The Ballarat Basketball Association’s 2010 Championship Season kicks off this week with a record number of teams competing for their respective titles.

Australia Claims Sixth at U17 Worlds

The Australian U17 basketball team has claimed sixth spot at the inaugural U17 World Championships held over the past two weeks in Hamburg, Germany.

Local Ballarat basketballers Tom Downie, Jarrod Fryar and Ash Constable all put in admirable performances throughout the tournament, but the team was unable to beat Serbia in the playoff for 5th and 6th position.

The Australian team stood up in their final game today, but ultimately the tough Serbs would not melt under the Australians’ pressure. The Aussies missed out on fifth place after the Serbians exploded for seven points in the final 2:34 minutes of play to take the win. Read More

Ballarat Basketball Manager Maureen Hunt is facing some sleepless nights as she tries to fit in the extra teams queuing up to play in the 2010 Championship season due to commence from July 12th while others sit on a waiting list hoping to play.

This time last year when faced with a similar problem Hunt said that much of the increase was in the senior teams section with twenty one new teams in that season. Read More

Basketball is king of the 'burbs when it comes to the most popular sports Victorians want to play. Aussie rules has been slam dunked by the popular American pastime, which has exploded in popularity across Melbourne's fringe.

And with a whopping 35 per cent of Australia's registered players living in Melbourne's southeast corridor, basketball chiefs have warned there's no stopping the boom.
"It is truly international," Basketball Victoria CEO Wayne Bird said. "The sport offers pathways to world championships and Olympics for all athletes."It's family orientated and can be played all year round and anywhere from a basketball stadium, to the ring above a garage door." Read More

2010 McDonald’s Ballarat Junior Basketball Tournament Results

2010 was the 39th consecutive running of this major event in Ballarat, and this year just on 200 teams participated in 500 games of basketball in three days. Young basketballers could be seen across the city at all times of the day and night as they made their way to games in six sports venues, and then descended upon Ballarat’s eateries and tourist spots in between.

The victors in the 29 divisions proudly held their trophies aloft following the Grand Finals, but many teams will count the tournament as a success, as it matches city v country, local v representative and single teams against large Associations. Coaches can gain a great insight into the development of their players when the context of each game is assessed.

The strong presence of Associations such as Werribee and Sunbury is reflected in the results as both had many teams through to the Grand Finals, but often it is the success of the unexpected which thrills the crowd. One such example was in the U/12 Girls C Grade where Port Fairy won by a single point over Frankston and reputedly won the town’s first ever basketball competition. Read More
