December 2009

Welcome to the Ballarat Representative Program for 2009/10, we are looking forward to another year of success both on and off the court. There are some exciting new additions to the program, with the team blue / team gold format and the appointment of Guy Molloy to the Ballarat Basketball Association (more on Guy later in the newsletter). We hope you learn new skills, gain new friends and most importantly enjoy your participation in this very special basketball program.
Before we get into the new season, we must congratulate the exceptional efforts of the under 14 girls squad who qualified for the 2009 National Club Championships in Perth in September 2009. The girls qualified for the National Championship through their results in the Victorian Junior Basketball League and along with Traralgon were the only country teams eligible.
The coaches Jill Appleton and Darren Thomas trained the girls intensively leading up to the weeklong event and headed to the west prepared for this fantastic experience. Jill put in some extensive research on the opposition teams and was pleased that the hard work all round paid off, with an impressive result making it to 6th position. This result makes the U14 girls the number three team in Victoria (number one country team) behind Diamond Valley and the winners Dandenong. To see our Ballarat girls up against the best players in the country and performing so well was a definite highlight.
The parents must also be congratulated for their efforts in helping to fund the tour, they worked as hard as the players running fundraising activities over many months leading up to the event.

Tournaments / Super Sundays
Tournaments – there have been a number of Tournaments/Super Sundays already and there will be more in the New Year. Coaches will determine which events each squad will participate in.
Maryborough 31 October – 1st November - The under 12 boys and girls full squads went to Maryborough and came away with some good results with the two boys teams playing off in the final. The coaches had the opportunity to try players in game situations and identify areas for development.
Whittlesea Super Sunday 22nd November – the full squads went to Mill Park and played against Whittlesea and Craigieburn with Diamond Valley also in the U18 boys. This was a successful day and helped squads to prepare for the VJBL grading phase.
Geelong Tournament 28th – 29th November – There were eight Ballarat teams competing in the Geelong tournament with the U12s taking both teams, the girls section was reduced to one day due to shortage of teams which allowed only limited opportunities. The other age groups provided players and coaches with the chance to test the skills and team dynamics of each group. Overall Ballarat teams performed very well and had an enjoyable weekend in Geelong.

To ensure we all get the most out of the program, it is very important that all players and parents have read and understood the requirements and expectations of players and their families entering into this program. Please make yourself familiar with the codes of conduct and the rules and regulations as set out in the Guidelines, General Rules and Conditions for Players and Parents distributed to all members of the program. (This information is also available on the Ballarat Basketball website).
Congratulations to all squad members representing Ballarat in Port Macquarie and Albury.
