Under 14 Girls
The Ballarat Miners under 14 girls headed to Melbourne last Friday night to play Eltham in their round 13 clash of the Victorian Junior Basketball League.
Both teams took a while to settle into the game, with the ball travelling end to end for three minutes before anyone was able to get their first basket.
After the slow start Ballarat managed to hold on to a slim lead at the first break.
The Miners took control of the game in the second quarter, thanks largely to the efforts of Jane Swift and Kasey Burton.
The second half was all about defence as Ballarat stepped up their intensity and managed to pull away for a solid 16 point win.
Ballarat Miners 42 defeated Eltham 26.
Under 16 Girls
The Miners under 16 girls also headed to Melbourne for their clash with Eltham last Friday night.
Ballarat continued its good form of late, jumping out of the blocks and dominating the first quarter 17 – 7, Ella Burton unstoppable with 10 points.
Guard Madison Davis took control in the second quarter with 8 points of her own, leading Ballarat to a comfortable 35 – 15 halftime lead.
Physically Eltham tried to fight back early in the third quarter but they were no threat to the team work and skills the Miners displayed, extending their lead to 23 points at the final break.
A solid team effort throughout the final quarter helped Ballarat record its ninth win for the season.
Ballarat 55 defeated Eltham 31.
Under 14 Boys
Returning to their home court at the Minerdome, the Ballarat under 14 Boys faced Warrandyte last Friday night.
The Miners got out to an early advantage, with Joel Anstis and Tyler Constable providing early scoring options and helping Ballarat to a 22 – 18 lead at the half time break.
Warrandyte through their height and skill pulled the margin back in the second half and eventually took a one point lead with 45 seconds to go.
The Miners kept calm as the clock ran down and with 15 seconds remaining Constable managed to put Ballarat back in the lead and record a character building win 32 – 31.
Under 16 Boys
The Ballarat Miners under 16 boys played host to Sandringham in their round 13 clash of VJBL last Friday night.
Ballarat produced its best quarter of basketball this season ahead 21 – 8 at the first break.
Sandringham managed to get some respect back in the second and third quarters but the Miners were in cruise control as Josh Keys (17 points), Sean Massey (14) and Jack Sullivan (13) dominated at the offensive end.
Guard Anthony Fisher was also in fine form contributing 11 assists throughout the game.
Ballarat taking the win, 57 to 46.
Under 18 Boys
The Ballarat Miners under 18 Boys also played Sandringham in their round 13 clash last Friday night.
Sandringham came out with plenty of run, getting off to a flying start ahead 10 – 0 after three minutes.
Ballarat finally picked up their defensive intensity and got themselves back in the game. Scores level at quarter time 15 a piece.
Again Sandringham got on a run in the second quarter and pushed the half time margin out to 11 points.
The Miners outside shooting was keeping them in the game in the first half but when their shots dried up in the third quarter Sandringham continued to extend their lead.
Ballarat tried hard in the last quarter but the damage had been done as Sandringham recorded a 13 point win
72 – 59.
