VJBL Report - Round 17 2009
Under 14 Girls
The Miners under 14 girls travelled to Melbourne last Friday night to take on Diamond Valley in round 16 of the VJBL.
Coming off two tight defeats in the past two rounds, the Miners girls came out firing against the ladder leaders.
Miners Kayla Mallet was elevated to the starting five and provided some much needed spark with some tight defence and strong offensive plays throughout the game.
Ballarat took a small lead and some confidence into the quarter time break as Diamond Valley struggled to get past the Miners full court defensive pressure.
Diamond Valley increased their work output in the second half and with Ballarat handing them some easy baskets from turnovers, the game was put out of reach by three quarter time.
Diamond Valley recorded the win 64 to Ballarat 45.
Under 16 Girls
The Miners under 16 girls also travelled to Melbourne last Friday night to take on Diamond Valley.
Ella Burton’s 11 point first quarter helped Ballarat to a 5 point lead at the first break. Diamond Valley continued to struggle in the second quarter as the Miners pushed the lead out to 16 points by half time. 36 – 20.
Early fouls in the third quarter from Ballarat handed Diamond Valley 15 points from the free throw line dragging the margin back to 5 points with one quarter to play.
The physicality of the game lifted in the final term as neither team was giving away easy baskets. Emma White and Molly Mathews eventually managed to find their way to the basket allowing the Miners to sneak over the line 58 – 50.
Under 14 Boys
The Miners under 14 boys played host to Whittlesea at the Minerdome last Friday night.
Ballarat got off to a slow start, their defensive pressure lacking, which allowed Whittlesea to find easy avenues to the basket throughout the first half.
Some player changes and quick subs after half time helped Ballarat swing the game back in their favour as Whittlesea struggled with the increased intensity the Miners were producing.
Whittlesea hit back in the dying minutes of the game but Ballarat managed to hold on for a 4 point win, 38 – 34.
Under 16 Boys
Ballarat 72 defeated Melbourne 54
Ballarat 68 defeated Keilor 65
Under 18 Boys
Also at the Minerdome last Friday night, the Ballarat under 18 boys played host to Diamond Valley.
It was a very even game for all four quarters, as Ballarat was doing all it could to expose Diamond Valley’s height throughout the majority of the game.
With a 4 point lead at the half time break Ballarat changed its defence in the third term. As the Miners tried to open up the game, Diamond Valley responded taking full advantage of their opportunities and holding a 4 point lead with one quarter to play.
Ballarat’s James McMaster scored 8 straight points in the final term helping edge the Miners back into the lead and leaving Diamond Valley 2 points short as the final siren sounded. Ballarat 51 defeated Diamond Valley 49
