VJBL Report - Round 18 2009

Under 14 Girls

Ben MartinThe under 14 Girls faced Werribee in their round 17 VJBL game last Friday night at the Minerdome.
After a tough few weeks, the Miners jumped out to an early 11 – 2 lead thanks largely to Elizabeth Werry’s pressure up the court on Werribee’s guards, while Kayla Mallet continued her good form breaking the game open from the tip off.
At the offensive end, Ballarat managed to work the ball around well and with Werribee struggling to stop the Miner’s scoring options the lead continued to grow by half time.
Werribee responded in the second half as they restricted Ballarat to just 2 points for the quarter.
The last quarter was highlighted by an 8 point, one minute surge from the Miners. This surge put the game out of reach and also got Ballarat back on the winner’s list heading into the last game for the regular season next Friday night.
Ballarat 41 defeated Werribee 28.

Under 16 Girls
The under 16 Girls also played Werribee in their round 17 VJBL clash last Friday night at the Minerdome.
The Miners girls got off to a great start, as Ella Burton and Madison Davis continued on their good form of recent weeks and helped Ballarat to a 10 point advantage at quarter time.

Both teams struggled to capitalise in the second term as a lot of missed opportunities helped Ballarat maintain their early 10 point advantage at the half time break.
The Miners increased its defensive pressure in the third quarter, which restricted Werribee to just 2 points for the quarter and a handy lead at the final break, 41 – 23.
In the last quarter the Miners struggled at the offensive end but enough damage had already been done throughout the game and they eventually came away with an 11 point win.
Ballarat 43 defeated Werribee 32.

Under 14 Boys
The under 14 boys travelled to Melbourne last Friday night to take on Kilsyth in their round 17 VJBL clash.
The Miners got off to a great start, especially on the defensive end restricting Kilsyth to ten points for the half.

Ben Martin was providing the Miners with some aggressive offensive work around the basket which helped keep Kilsyth at bay in the opening minutes of the second half.
Kilsyth made a late run to get the game back under 10 points but the Miners responded and were able to come up with another big win against the second placed side 35 – 28.

Under 16 Boys
The under 16 Boys travelled down the highway last Friday night to play the top team, Werribee, in their round 17 VJBL match.

After a tough weekend last week with two games against the second and fourth placed teams, the Miners struggled to find the intensity and determination required for the match.
Werribee started the game with full court defensive pressure but it was their excellent offensive structure that pushed the lead out to 24 points by three quarter time.
The Miners responded in the fourth but it was too little too late as Werribee easily accounted for the third placed Ballarat team 62 – 44.

Under 18 Boys

The under 18 boys also faced Werribee in Werribee last Friday night.

Werribee came out firing in the first quarter as Ballarat struggled to execute offensive plays against some tight full court pressure.

The Miners continued to struggle through the second quarter, unable to stop Werribee running into transition for too many easy baskets.

The margin continued to grow in the last quarter as the Miners were unable to produce any stops at the defensive end.

In the end Werribee ran away 38 point winners 82 – 44.
