VJBL Report - Round 19 2009
Under 14 Girls
Ballarat travelled to Melbourne for the last game of the VJBL home and away season against Eltham.
Final ladder positions were still up for grabs, so it was a must win game for the Miners. After a slow start to the game, Ballarat had the better of a spirited Eltham outfit, holding a small lead at quarter time.
The second half proved better for the Miners, as they increased their lead and restricted their opponents to just a couple of baskets, but just as they had all the momentum, injuries hit and left just one fit player on the bench for most of the remainder of the match.
Ballarat had a commanding lead going into the final quarter, showing some positive signs heading into the finals series, and were able to hold off a strong comeback from the opposition as they held on for a 15 point victory.
Ballarat 43 defeated Eltham 28
Under 16 Girls
Ballarat travelled to Bendigo for their last game of the VJBL home and away season.
The Ballarat girls started well as Jane Douglass set the scene with 10 first quarter points, but a poor second quarter allowed Bendigo to stay in the game.
The second half was all Ballarat with Douglass, Ella Burton and Madison Davis continuing to lift the tempo.
Coach Glenn White was happy with the way his team performed.
“It was a good team effort with all players having a significant role in the final result. A convincing 25 point win was a satisfying way to end the home and away season, and consolidate the team in second place heading into the final series.”
Ballarat 70 defeated Bendigo 45.
Under 14 Boys
Melbourne Tigers 49 defeated 39.
Under 16 Boys
Ballarat played host to Knox last Friday night at the Minerdome in their last game of the VJBL season.
Having gone down to Knox by two points earlier in the season the Miners had a point to prove heading into the finals series.
Missing Jack Sullivan to injury and losing Josh Keys in the first quarter left the Miners very undersized, but with Eddie Neblett stepping up for his best game of the season and Sean Massey and Anthony Fisher continuing to dominate at this level the game was all but over by three quarter time.
Ballarat 76 defeated Knox 41
Under 18 Boys
The under 18 Ballarat boys played their last game for the season against Waverley last Friday night at the Minerdome.
The Miners got off to a good start as they executed their game plan well, but Waverley adjusted quickly and they began to hurt Ballarat with some easy transition baskets.
Late in the third quarter Waverley had pushed the margin out to 21 points but to the Miners credit they chipped away on the score board and got the margin back to a respectable result.
Ballarat 49 lost to Waverley 60.
