VJBL Report - Round 4 2009
U18 Boys
The Ballarat U18 boys went up against the Waverley Falcons on Friday night in round 4 of the Victorian Junior Basketball League.
Waverley came into this game trying to rattle Ballarat from the beginning as they were far bigger, stronger and played a more physical style of game.
Ballarat withstood Waverley’s pressure early pushing the ball up the floor and creating good options at the offensive end.
A lop sided third quarter with Waverley scoring 21 points to 4, blew the game out of Ballarats reach. Ballarat unable to match their size under the basket.
The last quarter saw Ballarat put in a fighting effort as they improved their offensive execution, but the damage had already been done. Waverley 81 Def Ballarat 51.
U16 Boys
Ballarats U16 boys travelled to Melbourne to face off against Sandringham.
After a demoralising game for Sandringham last week, Ballarat went into the match full of confidence but after the first quarter they soon realised that they would need to be at there best to get a win.
Nothing went Ballarats way, as the game turned into a scrappy encounter. Coach Darren Govan disappointed with the way his team cruised into the game.
“We weren’t switched on from the start and they made us pay at the start of the game, once we showed them some respect we started to get things going.”
Ballarat eventually recording its third win of the season and now sit comfortably in third position on the ladder.
U14 Boys
The division one under 14 boys team got there season underway against Warrandyte in Melbourne Friday night.
Against a very tall squad Ballarat couldn’t match Warrandyte at both ends of the floor.
Since qualifying four weeks ago Ballarat struggled with match fitness and went down fighting 43-31.
U16 Girls
The U16 Girls had a home game against Eltham which was a see sawing battle, neither team able to gain any sort of major advantage.
Ballarat’s Molly Mathews and Ella Burton had solid games at the offensive end while guards Emma White and Maddy Davies lifted the tempo in the second half to keep Ballarat in the game.
Foul shots and costly turnovers eventually hurting Ballarat, as Eltham capitalised on the home teams errors and snuck over the line 51-49. Coach Glenn White full of praise for his team.
“We are working extremely hard but we just can’t get ourselves across the line in the close games.”
U14 Girls
The under 14 Ballarat girls also played at home against Eltham on Friday night.
This game was much closer than anticipated in the first half, as Ballarat had to work hard to shake off a determined Eltham team.
Jane Swift the standout for Ballarat with 26 points, backed up by a solid 14 points from Imogen Wilson.
Ballarat eventually running away with the game 62-45 and keeping there unbeaten record on track as they sit equal top of the ladder on 4 wins 0 losses.
