VJBL Report - Round 6 2009
U14 Girls
The Ballarat under 14 Girls played host to Diamond Valley at the Minerdome on Friday night, in Round 6 of the Victorian Junior Basketball League.
Ballarat started slowly in the first quarter unable to find the basket and trailed by 6 at the first break.
Giving away a great amount of height to Diamond Valley centre, Ballarats Imogen Wilson continued her run of great form wearing down her opponent. The highlight of the match a big three pointer late in the second quarter to break open the game. This helped ballarat to a 9-point lead at the half time break.
Undefeated after 5 matches Diamond Valley fought their way back into the game. Lead changes continued to occur throughout the third and fourth quarters but a determined Ballarat with the help of guard Lauren Jew helped Ballarat hold on for a 3-point win 52 – 49.
U16 Girls
The Ballarat under 16 Girls also played against Diamond Valley at the Minerdome on Friday night.
It was a night for slow starts as the Ballarat girls couldn’t get going but luckily opposition Diamond Valley also struggled to find the basket. Ballarat holding a 6 point lead at quarter time.
Ballarat controlled the play for the majority of the second and third quarters but continued to struggle offensively unable to capitalise on the scoreboard, Diamond Valley levelling the score at the last break.
It was back and fourth on the scoreboard throughout the final quarter as the game went down to the wire in the dying minutes. Unfortunately for Ballarat some poor shot selection and unforced turnovers cost the home side and Diamond Valley hung on for a 1-point win, 53 – 52.
U14 Boys
Ballarat under 14 boys travelled to Mill Park Friday night to contest their round 6 match up against Whittlesea.
An injury during the week forced Ballarat’s big man Harrison Robertson out of the match, leaving athletic forward Ben Martin to provide an inside presence and do the bulk of the rebounding.
Martin playing a big role in Ballarat’s domination of the first half, restricting Whittlesea as a team too only 6-points.
Ballarat’s poor decision making and lazy passing allowed Whittlesea back into the game in the second half.
Everything went the oppositions way in the last few minutes as a long range three point buzzer beater from Whittlesea’s point guard, tied the scores at 24 a piece, leaving Ballarat disappointed after such a strong start.
U16 Boys
The under 16 Boys headed to Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre to play the Melbourne Tigers.
Outscored 18 – 8 in the opening quarter, Ballarat were in for a long night. After losing their focus and letting too much frustration creep into their game Ballarat were struggling at both ends of the floor.
Ballarat, through some tough work from Shaun Massey and Luke Bailey, put in a spirited effort in the second and third quarters to help reduce the margin and gain some respect back on the scoreboard.
Melbourne Tigers steadied in the last as Ballarat ran out of legs. A low scoring encounter ended in a 6-point deficit Ballarat going down 46 – 40.
