VJBL Report - Round 9 2009
U14 Girls
The Miners under 14 Girls travelled to Werribee, in Round 9 of the Victorian Junior Basketball League last Friday night.
The Miners were sent a wake up call from Werribee in the first half as Ballarat struggled to get the scoreboard ticking over.
Ballarat re-grouped at half time but it was still Werribee who had control late in the third quarter.
Lauren Jew and Jane Swift helped the Miners back into the lead and with some self belief and strong baskets in the dying minutes, Ballarat held on for an 8-point win. 39 – 31.
U16 Girls
The Miners under 16 Girls played away against Werribee last Friday night.
Ballarat started slow which allowed Werribee to take the lead in the first quarter 17 - 14.
Ella Burton fired up the Miners in the second quarter, scoring 8-points, which helped Ballarat take a 1-point advantage into the half time break.
The second half was all Ballarat with, Jane Douglass, Madi Davis, Emma White and Molly Mathews all increasing their work ethic and pushing the lead out to 11 points by three quarter time.
Although Ballarat couldn’t manage any more than 4-points in the last quarter, the Miners defence kept Werribee scoreless and in turn helped Ballarat record a 15 point win, 46 – 31.
U14 Boys
The Miners under 14 Boys played at home against Kilsyth last Friday night in round 9 of VJBL.
Ballarat got out to a great start against the undefeated Kilsyth team pushing the lead out early and managing to keep Kilsyth to single figures throughout the first half.
Everything was going the Miners way as the game continued with all players getting on the scoreboard and helping their side to an impressive 45 – 26 home win.
Coach Michael Agnew was excited by his team domination of the game.
“It clearly shows what we are capable of, when we play as a team.”
U16 Boys
The Miners under 16 Boys played host to Werribee at the Minerdome last Friday night.
Up against the undefeated Werribee team, Ballarat were expecting a tough contest from the beginning.
The Miners managed to jump out to a 7-0 lead after the first 2 minutes but once Werribee had settled they took control of the first quarter ahead 20 – 13 at the first break.
Werribee continued its form in the second quarter racking up a further 22 points and extending the half time lead to 11 and leaving Ballarat trying to find a way to stop them at the offensive end.
The third quarter was Ballarats best as they increased their defensive intensity and managed to restrict Werribee’s scoring opportunities.
Down 4 points with one quarter to play Ballarat tried everything to steel the lead but Werribee eventually managed to keep control of the ball and run away winners 69 to Ballarats 61.
U18 Boys
The under 18 Miners boys faced Shepparton in their Round 9 match up last Friday night.
Shepparton looked a little sluggish after a long trip to Ballarat and Miners guard Daniel Wehrung got his team off to a flying start, leading 9 – 0 after 4 minutes.
Ballarat’s quick transition and well executed plays helping them take a 4-point advantage at the first break.
The Miners maintained their pressure in the second quarter and although taking an 8-point lead into half time the game was still well and truly up for grabs.
The third and fourth quarters were all Ballarat as they increased their intensity at both ends of the floor and put the game completely out of reach for Shepparton.
