U/16’s Record Second Win for the Season

The Ballarat Miners U/16 boys have recorded their second win for season 2010 in the Victorian Junior League 3 competition.

Ballarat took on Broadmeadows (3) at the Minerdome on Friday night and never looked like being challenged after the first five minutes of the game passed.

Molly MathewsThe Miners proved to be far too strong for an undersized Broncos team as they dominated on the offensive and defensive rebounds. This saw Ballarat lead by fifteen points at the half time break.

In the second term Ballarat were able to continue their performance and blow the lead out to over twenty points by the ten minute mark. They were then able to experiment with some new offences and practise their defensive skills as Broadmeadows fell to pieces.

Coach Darren Thomas said “It's great to see the team coming out so hungry after the holiday break. We've now shown what we're capable of when we get after the ball and play aggressively. With some tough games coming up we will need to maintain this for the rest of the season”.

Final score Ballarat 52 defeated Broadmeadows 27.
Scorers – Ballarat: Mitch Gilbert 15, Tanner Hamilton 10.

The under 16 girls also recorded another win against the Melbourne Tigers second team. Ballarat were unable to shake Melbourne for the majority of the first half and were forced to resort to a zone defensive structure early in the second half.

This gave the Miners some space to breath and allowed Molly Matthews to rebound and run the ball with help from Claire Constable and Liz Werry. All three players were key contributors to Ballarat’s 18 point win. This sees Ballarat move to third position and puts them in contention for the finals.

Final score Ballarat 64 defeated Melbourne (2) 46

  • U/14 Boys – Knox (3) 53 def Ballarat 36
  • U/14 Girls – Sandringham 57 def Ballarat 39
  • U/18 Boys and girls both had a bye.
