The Ballarat Miners U18 women’s team have moved to seventh place on the VJBL Championship ladder after beating Bulleen by 19 points on Friday night.
Ballarat set the tone early with young star Jane Douglas leading her side. Her ability to find her teammates on offence saw the Miners take a three point lead at the half time break.
In the third term Ballarat switched on and outscored Bulleen by 8 points. Sophie Alexander played a good supporting role to Douglas and finished with a massive 21 points. Ballarat now sits seventh on the ladder and will be looking to climb even higher as they get closer to the finals.

The U18 men’s team also recorded a good win against Werribee at the expense of star guard Jarrod Fryar who suffered a dislocated elbow late in the game. The game was up for grabs after the first half as both teams struggled to put points on the scoreboard early.
Ballarat were the first to break away, building an 18 point lead in the first half. However, Werribee turned their game around and got the deficit back to only two points at half time.
The Miners then stepped their defence up in the third term and again built their lead into double figures. The home side then went on to win by 22 points. The victory was soured when Fryar suffered a horrific injury to his arm after a spectacular dunk in the dying seconds of the match.

The Ballarat U16 boys also recorded a win over 4th placed Broadmeadows. Ballarat got off to u quick start scoring eight points in the first 2 minutes. However, Broadmeadows stayed in touch and managed to get some key Ballarat players into foul trouble early.

Both the U16 and U14 girls couldn’t come up with winning performances against their opposition. The U16 Miners played at the Minerdome against a very strong Diamond Valley side. Abby Wehrung and Molly Matthews tried to keep their side in the game but Diamond Valleys defence was too strong.
The U14 girls travelled to Sandringham to take on the Sabres but went down by 4 points. The loss of two key players to illness late on Friday afternoon made it difficult for Ballarat to run the game out. In the end it was Sandringham who had the legs to finish the game off.
The under 14 boys team defeated Knox 24 – 21.
