Celtic Green Cement Championship Favouritism
Celtic Tigers Green have cemented top spot and are now highly regarded as championship favourites in the Ballarat Basketball’s A Grade men’s competition after a commanding 10 point victory over Phoenix on Monday night.
Miners’ legend Eric Hayes continued to lead his team on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. From the beginning of the game Celtic took control with their aggressive style of play paying dividends. Phoenix’s Brad Henderson tried to keep his team in the race with 18 points in the first half.
After creating an 8 point lead at half time, Celtic was able to control the second half also. Their big presence inside the key proved too much for Phoenix’s defence.
Hayes dominated the key scoring 17 points in the second term to finish with 23 for the match. Veteran DJ Sutton also contributed with 18 points while Ben New finished with 17.
Phoenix’s Simon Quiddington finished the match with 16 points while Henderson managed a game high 26.
Final score Celtic Green 74 defeating Phoenix 64.
In the A Grade women’s competition Celtic Tigers Red moved two games clear of Exies Acmy after a 7 point win on Monday night. The team has now secured third position for the 2010 Premiership season.
The game started off very sluggish with both teams struggling to put points on the scoreboard in the first term. Celtic’s Sophie Alexander got the scoring underway and opened the flood gates for her side. Celtic went on to build a 12 point lead going into half time with Alexander contributing 10.
The second half saw the tides turn as Exies took control of the scoring. Ella Burton and Lucia Shepherd provided sparks for Exies on offense and defence.
Despite the aggression from Exies they were unable to make up the deficit set in the first half, as Celtic ran away with a seven point win.
Sophie Alexander finished the game with 16 points while teammate Laura Bailey finished with 14. Exies player Ella Burton scored a game high 19 points, backed up by Lucia Shepherd with 13.
