Round 2 A Grade Report

The Ballarat Trophies and Gifts A Grade competition continued to provide some high quality basketball in round 2 of the 2010 Championship Season on Monday night.

In the night’s first game of the men’s competition Celtic Tigers Red faced off in an inter-club match against Celtic Tigers Green. The club has again entered two even teams in the competition as the result showed.

Luke CavanaghIn the first half it was Celtic Red who took the advantage after some intense full court running and accurate shooting. Playing Coach Luke Cavanagh led the way in scoring, dropping 11 points in the first term. Celtic Red leading 24-24 at the half.

In the second half Celtic Green found their groove and managed to create some good shots getting to the basket. Ben New and DJ Sutton linked up well to bring the scores back to even with only minutes to go. With help from ex-Miners player Matt Johnston, Green took the lead and stretched it out to seven points in the final 2 minutes.

Despite their repeated efforts, Celtic Red weren’t able to create the shots they needed and Celtic Green took away a 3 point win.

Final score Celtic Green 59 defeated Celtic Red 56.

In the A Grade women’s competition Celtic Red did their best to try and stop Saints Blue’s dominance over the competition, but was unsuccessful.

The young Celtic side matched up well against the experience of the Saints side; however their lack of height saw them fall behind late in the first half.

After trailing by 13 at the halfway mark, Celtic managed to reduce the margin to 8 points by the final buzzer. Laura Bailey led Celtic in the scoreboard with 18 points while Andrea Collins managed 20 points for Saints.

Final score Saints Blue 63 defeated Celtic Red 55
Scorers

  • Saints: Collins 20, Lucas 16.
  • Celtic: Bailey 18, Evans, Alexander 8.
