Ballarat under 14 Girls heading off to Perth for Nationals
The Ballarat Miners Representative under 14 girls basketball team will be leaving for Perth this weekend to contest the 2009 National Club Championships. Local referee Mitch Harris has also been chosen to attend and officiate.
The girls qualified for the Nationals from their results in the Victorian Junior League this season and along with Traralgon will be the only country teams attending.
Coaches Jill Appleton and Darren Thomas, are pleased with the girls’ preparation leading into the weeklong event and have been training four days a week for the past two weeks.
The draw was only released early this week and Ballarat have the following teams in their preliminary pool - Canberra Nationals, Illawarra Hawks (NSW), Eastern Mavericks (SA) Wanneroo Wolves (WA) and the Northern Territory Suns.
Twenty four teams will be contesting the event and if the Ballart girls can finish first or second in their pool, later in the week they will play off for positions one to eight - this is the team’s goal.
Local referee Mitch Harris will also be attending his first National Championships, and to be chosen from so many Referees within the state is a great achievement for him, and caps off a great development year, which has seen him officiating games at National level in the SEABL and D-League Competitions.
Draw for Ballarat girls:
- Monday 28th V Illawarra Hawks @ Noon
- Tuesday 29th V Eastern Mavericks @ 9.00am
- Tuesday 29th V Wanneroo Wolves @ 3.30pm
