Ballarat secures another major Basketball Event

The Ballarat Basketball Association has made a successful bid for the 2010 Basketball Victoria Country Council’s Club Championships.

This event affectionately known as the “Clubbies” brings together Club teams from across country Victoria in all age groups from U/12 to U/18. It has a special place in the calendar, having been staged for more than 30 years, and because it is designed to seek out the best Club team in an age group – not the best Representative team.

Competition is fierce and old rivalries between Clubs based in Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong or Traralgon come to the fore. A special Award, the Max Bowman Shield, is made to the most successful Club across all competitions, and Ballarat’s Celtic Tigers have won this in 9 of the last 10 years of competition.

Last year more than 110 teams competed with teams from Shepparton, Morwell, Warragul, Mildura, Swan Hill, Moe and the major centres mentioned above. In recent years all of Ballarat’s Clubs have entered.

The “Clubbies” are held in October each year, and with the expected number of entries anticipated to rise next year, more than 1500 players, supporters and visitors will be in Ballarat for the weekend.

Ballarat Basketball is hoping that the attraction of this event to the City will become an annual event, and that as other major basketball events become available for tender, Ballarat’s fine record on and off the court will swing the events in our favour.
