Miners re-sign Mathison for 2009

The RetireInvest Ballarat Miners today announced that head coach Shane Mathison has signed on for the 2009 season.

Securing Mathison for 2009 is fantastic news for the Miners as who are currently in a hotly contested race to for a finals spot in the East Conference.

Although the Miners have had an inconsistent year, dealing with significant changes to personnel from the 2007 squad, Mathison’s coaching has won praise from all corners.

With the introduction of imports Marcus Toney-el & Jamal Brown and the progression of younger players Adam McSwain and Ricky Henderson, Mathison has been able to bring the Miners back into finals contention.

When asked about his re-signing Mathison said “It has been a great year for me getting reacquainted with my love for basketball and working with such a good group of players, so the decision to go on for next year was a very easy one”.

“For all the improvement we have shown this year, there is more improvement left in these guys yet.”

Mathison acknowledged the support of his family, especially wife Anna, who is expecting the couple’s second child in October.

“It is a big commitment juggling work, family and basketball, but it’s easier with Anna right behind me”.

Mathison also acknowledged the great support he has received from Club legend Eric Hayes, his assistant coach, and Greg Rogers (Miners Team Manager).

“Eric has been fantastic – his experience is unparalleled, and the Miners are privileged to have him, as we are with Greg, who does everything.”

Ballarat Basketball Club President Luke Dunne said “In our mid-season reviews, what shone through was the positive feedback about Shane from the playing group. He is a player’s coach, he came with a plan and sets high standards on and off the court.”

“He is a perfect for fit for our Club”.

Mr Dunne said that the Club hoped to have further announcements about 2009 before the start of the 2008 finals.

“Our planning is quite advanced for 2009, but there are still a few threads to draw together.”
