2014 City of Ballarat Senior Basketball Tournament

Ballarat Basketball has again successfully hosted another major event for the city with the running of the 46th City of Ballarat Senior Tournament.  Close to 700 players called Ballarat home for the weekend as they played their sport during the day and enjoyed all that Ballarat offers over the Begonia weekend at night. Nine divisions of basketball were played and close competition was evident across the board. The return of a Women’s A Grade competition was welcomed by a big crowd on Court 1 at the Mars Minerdome. This grade gave the Ballarat Rush Youth League team a chance to test themselves against some strong metropolitan teams.  The girls made it into the Grand Final against Melbourne Uni and a titanic struggle ensued with rarely a basket or two between the teams until the last couple of minutes when the local girls held their nerve to claim a great title. Mens A Grade featured a number of Big V teams including the Warrnambool Seahawks who combined well in all games to force themselves into the Grand Final against Keysborough.  It was a tight game all the way to the wire with both sides desperate for the win.  Scores were tied with less than 30 seconds to play and Keysborough just missed the final shot of the game leaving Warrnambool celebrating a 2 point win. State Bank Blue made it back to back titles when they took out the Mens Masters section.  The team now boasts a number of former Miners players who still have the “skills and the smarts” to find a way to win.  It was a high standard game and runners-up NFC Warriors could easily have stolen it Local sides did very well in B Men, making up three of the four semi-final positions.  Dragon Vultures and Bulls were the successful two to fight for the cash, and they were both tenacious from the outset.  Bulls held their nerve to win by a single basket. And local sides in CW also dominated the competition with HPD making the move up from Social to claim a strong victory over Rusty Cheese.  And in Mens C Grade JKDs were just a little steadier when it counted as they achieved a slender 4 point win over Craigieburn. In C Men2 La Trobe Uni had looked like the team to beat all weekend, but The Marvels jumped them in the Grand Final and despite a spirited fightback midway by the students, the Marvels regrouped and held sway. Social Women was dominated by Schmoosters throughout and they controlled the match from start to finish.  Special mention should be made of runners-up Revival who came to this grade when a Masters Women division did not have enough entries. Long time supporters of the tournament TTTHF made it through to the Social Men Grand Final, however had to be content with the runners-up position as Reflex had their shooting game working and edged away in the second half to claim victory.
