5pm – Basketball Ballarat Local Clubs Coronavirus update

LOCAL FINALS FROM TONIGHT:

Dear Clubs, Players, Coaches, Referees and Parents,

This afternoon we monitored the decisions made by the Federal Government regarding COVID-19.

The Prime Minister in his Press Conference Friday afternoon advised that:

  • There are restrictions on non essential public gatherings of 500 people or more from Monday March 16th
  • The Prime Minister defined public gatherings as static gatherings of 500 plus persons for two hours or more.

Based on this advice Basketball Ballarat will conduct its finals this weekend across the four venues scheduled to host these matches.

Given the 500 capacity number it is also planned to continue with senior finals next week as numbers in our venues would be under this limit.

Basketball Ballarat continues to monitor the situation with regard to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and is taking steps to protect members, employees and guests against the spread of the virus in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Department of Health. We, therefore, ask you to ensure that you comply with the guidelines issued by our Health Authorities in order to protect our basketball and wider community and limit the spread of this virus.

If you have recently travelled from, or transited through a designated country**, or have been in contact with anyone confirmed to have contracted the Coronavirus, or with anyone suspected of having such symptoms in the last 14 days, you will be required to undertake a period of self-isolation (quarantine) for 14 days. If this condition applies to you, or anyone you know, you are requested to not attend any Basketball Ballarat Venue, Club Training Venue and (for any Ballarat Teams) any other VJBL or NBL1 venue in any capacity (even as a spectator) until the applicable quarantine period has expired.

If you or anyone you know present symptoms similar to that of coronavirus, you are requested to exercise common sense and not attend any Basketball Ballarat Venue.

Given the uncertainty of the situation evolving in Australia, we would ask that all parents exercise common sense and your own best judgement. Please be especially mindful if you or your child/ren attend a school with a known outbreak.

At this point in time, all Junior and Senior Domestic finals matches will be proceeding as scheduled.

We ask for your absolute cooperation in adhering to these guidelines for the benefit of your fellow basketball members.

We will continue to update you as the situation evolves and we are reviewing this decision daily..

Sincerely,
Peter Eddy
Chief Executive Officer
Basketball Ballarat

Basketball Victoria Statement

The following is a statement from Basketball Victoria CEO Nick Honey regarding COVID-19.

13/3/20 – Update

Basketball Victoria has made the decision to suspend Basketball Victoria related programs, events and leagues from now March 13, until further notice. This includes ALL VJBL games, Big V games and the Country Championships being held in Ballarat this weekend.

As this is a rapidly evolving situation, we would like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience as we work through this difficult period. This is a decision we don’t take lightly and want to reassure the basketball

community that we will continue to work with the Victorian Government and other health authorities to ensure the health and wellbeing of our players, coaches, referees and staff are maintained.

Further updates will be provided in the coming days and weeks.
