Australia Junior Championships

Basketball Ballarat is excited to welcome the under 18 Australian Junior Champions and Kevin Coombs cup to Ballarat and Selkirk Stadium. 30 teams will begin arriving in Ballarat from Friday ahead of the opening ceremony on Saturday.

Games officially commence Sunday 10th of April and the Championship games will be played on Sunday 17th of April.

Basketball Ballarat has been working with Basketball Australia to deliver this eight-day event. Basketball Ballarat CEO Nev Ivey says, “We are excited to host our first U18 Australian Junior Championships since 2015, in the newly completed Selkirk Stadium”.

Ivey added, “We have a history of delivering great events for Basketball and the Ballarat region and after this event was cancelled in 2020 we are pleased to be able to host this year, now that Stage 2 has been completed and Selkirk Stadium is ready for major events.”

City of Ballarat Councilor, Peter Eddy said it is fantastic to have great sporting facilities up to the standard of hosting national events.

“We are thrilled to see the Selkirk Stadium being used for this national event, to showcase some of the best young basketballers in Australia on Ballarat’s courts,” he said.

“With teams, support staff and families coming to us from across Australia, it is an excellent opportunity to highlight what Ballarat has to offer, not just in a sporting sense, but also our tourism and hospitality offerings.”

Basketball Australia’s competition manager Sarah Monck said “Basketball Australia is looking forward to kicking off its Australian Junior Championships calendar in Ballarat next week. The Under-18 and Kevin Coombs Cup (Wheelchair athletes) will give over 450 athletes the chance to get back on the court at the highest level.”

Monck added “The championships will also provide locals with the chance to see some of the best basketballers in the country. The brilliant facilities at Ballarat will be in use all week with games daily from Sunday 10th to Sunday 17th April.”

With 300 athletes and 150 support staff in Ballarat for the Championships, this is a great opportunity for Basketball Ballarat to showcase Selkirk Stadium and its’ ability to host National Events.

Additionally with teams coming from every State and Territory across Australia and state borders freely open we are expecting the athletes’ families to join them here in Ballarat for the week to enjoy a high standard of basketball but also Ballarat’s excellent accommodation, cafes, restaurants, and tourist attractions.
