Neville Ivey – Current CEO, Nathan Johnstone – Chair of the Board & Travis Merlo – New CEO
The Board of Basketball Ballarat is pleased to announce the appointment of Travis Merlo as the organisation’s new Chief Executive Officer, following an extensive and competitive recruitment process.
Mr Merlo brings over 25 years of hands-on leadership experience across government, corporate, and professional services. His career has included senior roles with KPMG, GE Capital, V/Line, PwC, and the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as significant community engagement through his work as a volunteer coach and committee member.
As the current Deputy Chair of the Basketball Ballarat Board, Travis has demonstrated an exceptional understanding of the Association’s ambitions and the challenges facing its members. His leadership is characterised by collaboration, integrity, and a people-first approach.
“Travis’ appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Basketball Ballarat,” said Chair of the Board, Nathan Johnstone. “The Board is confident that his deep experience, strategic mindset, and genuine connection to the Ballarat community will ensure the continued growth and success of the organisation.”
Mr Johnstone also acknowledged the contribution of JK Personnel, in particular Tim Walshe and Kate Kilbourne, for managing the recruitment process.
“We extend our sincere thanks to JK Personnel, especially Tim and Kate, for their thorough and professional approach throughout the search and selection process. Their expertise ensured we identified the best possible leader for the next stage of Basketball Ballarat’s journey,” Mr Johnstone said.
Travis expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity: “I’m genuinely excited to get started, and grateful to be working with such a strong team already in place. I’ll be working closely with Nev over the first month to ensure a smooth transition; there’s plenty to do, and one of my priorities will be reaching out to our domestic clubs to understand their needs better, so we can work together to create an even stronger Association for all involved.”
The Board also paid tribute to outgoing CEO Neville Ivey, who will step down after a distinguished tenure leading Basketball Ballarat through significant growth and development.
“Nev’s leadership has left a lasting legacy,” Mr Johnstone said. “His commitment, professionalism, and steady guidance have positioned the organisation for continued success. We thank him sincerely for his service and dedication to the Ballarat basketball community.”
Mr Merlo will officially commence as CEO later this month.
