The Ballarat Miners are thrilled to announce the appointment of highly decorated coach David Herbert as Head Coach of the NBL1 Women’s team.
Herbert returns to the Miners program after previously coaching the team in 2022, bringing with him years of experience across some of the highest levels of Australian basketball.
David brings more than 25 years of experience across the Basketball Australia pathway, having coached at NBL1 and WNBL level, at National Junior Championships and with Australian national teams. Herbert has earned multiple Coach of the Year honours throughout his career and will be a huge asset to the Miners program.
Alongside his role with the NBL1 Women’s team, Herbert will also bring his experience and knowledge to Ballarat Basketball’s wider women’s pathway, supporting the development of players and coaches from juniors through to NBL1.
Basketball Ballarat CEO Travis Merlo said the organisation was delighted to welcome David Herbert back to Ballarat.
“We are thrilled to welcome back David ‘Herbie’ Herbert as our NBL1 Women’s Head Coach.”
“Herbie’s track record at the highest levels of the game, including his work within the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence and as head coach of the Australian Gems, demonstrates his ability to develop winning teams and world-class athletes.”
“What excites us most is his commitment to working across our entire women’s program, from juniors through to NBL1, to invest in the growth of our players and coaches and to strengthen our elite pathway here in Ballarat.”
For Herbert, the opportunity to return to Ballarat is about building something that extends well beyond the NBL1 court.
“I’m extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity to return to Ballarat Basketball and lead the NBL1 Women’s program.”
“Ballarat has a proud basketball history and a strong sense of community. What really excites me about this role is the opportunity to build something that extends beyond the NBL1 team and create an environment where our players and coaches can develop.”
“We want to build a team that competes with a clear identity, plays for each other and represents Ballarat in the right way. I’m looking forward to working with everyone at the club and building something we can all be proud of.”
Herbert’s return marks an exciting chapter for the Miners, with the club looking to build on its strong foundations and continue developing a sustainable pathway for female athletes and coaches across Ballarat.
Welcome back to Ballarat, Herbie.
