43rd McDonald’s Ballarat Junior Basketball Tournament
Seventeen basketball courts across the City of Ballarat are quiet on Monday night following a constant run of games in this year Ballarat Junior Basketball Tournament. 600 games in 31 divisions had the 2500 players on the go for the whole weekend.
Whilst the silverware is always the goal when a team enters, many coaches will reflect on the tournament and know that their players have gained from the experience of pitting their skills against different opposition.
The Grand Finals were full of intense pressure with a number of games going into overtime and double-overtime.
Werribee had a very successful tournament winning six titles, but there was an even spread across the grades. Castlemaine were a surprise packet this year gaining three winners trophies from the eight teams they entered.
Ballarat won the U/16 and U/14 A Grade girls under the direction of Eric Hayes and Sarah Monck topping off a successful series of games for all the Ballarat squads.
A tournament of this size relies on many people sacrificing their long weekend for the presentation of the sport and Events Manager at Ballarat Basketball, Mark Valentine singled out the Venue Supervisors for special mention. “ These people manage the venues sometimes for over 12 hours at a time and face the public in all their guises whether it be winning or losing, and operate with fine grace while under constant pressure”, he said. “It is a task which in my opinion helps to raise the bar in the presentation of this event”, he added.
The tournament will be back in 2015 and many visitors will no doubt make Ballarat their second home for the Queens Birthday long weekend.
