The Ballarat GMHBA Miners can take a valuable conference win over predicted powerhouse Brisbane Spartans tomorrow night.
The Miners went down by nine in Mount Gambier in their first game last week despite a combined 40 points from new import duo Roy Booker and Ken Horton.
Scores were level midway through the last quarter but the Pioneers closed the quarter shooting at a blistering 61 per cent to run away with the win.
The Miners’ twin towers of Chris Smith and Liam Gibcus have a great opportunity to improve on their first round performances – Gibcus grabbed 10 rebounds and Smith six, but poor shooting saw the duo combine for just five points on 11 shots.
Turnovers proved costly for Ballarat, with 15 to Brisbane’s seven. Settling in and reducing the number of turnovers will greatly increase the Miners’ chances of taking a win.
Brisbane struggled in the first round with a one-point loss to Bendigo on Saturday followed by a 27-point loss to Nunawading in which no Brisbane player scored more than 12 points and the team turned the ball over 19 times.
The game tips off at 7:15 at Brisbane’s Rowland Cowling Stadium. Thank you to Thrifty Ballarat for looking after all our travel needs.
