Ballarat Rush players Kasey Burton and Abbey Wehrung won the gold medal last night when their Victorian Under 20 side defeated New South Wales 87-64 at the Australian Junior Championships in Perth.
Wehrung racked up five assists in her 25 minutes, Burton grabbed four rebounds and connected on her lone shot attempt in her 10 minutes, but it was WNBL player Lauren Scherf who dominated for the
Vics with 33 points at 72% shooting, 16 rebounds and a massive five blocks.
Victoria was undefeated through six games with an average winning margin of 26 points. The only scare came in the semi-final when the narrowly edged out Queensland 73-70.
The gold medal is Wehrung’s second in this competition after earning her first last year as a 17-year-old. Burton, 17, was a debutant in this year’s Championships.
Wehrung played moderate minutes throughout the tournament to average five points, two rebounds and two assists, while Burton was productive in similar game time for five points, five rebounds and two assists per game.
Both players return to Rush training this week. The Rush play their first game on Saturday March 29 in Brisbane, then make their home debut on Saturday April 5.
