In a moment that will inspire generations of young basketballers across the region, Ballarat’s own Georgia Amoore has officially been drafted into the 2025 WNBA Draft, selected at pick 6 by the Washington Mystics.
Georgia’s journey to the world’s premier women’s basketball league began on the courts of Ballarat, where she first picked up a basketball with local domestic club Exies-Acmy. From those early days, her talent and love for the game were unmistakable.
She quickly rose through the ranks, joining Ballarat’s and Country Victoria’s representative program where she starred at the junior level before progressing to Youth League and then to Senior Women’s competition, representing the then Ballarat Rush in the SEABL and later NBL1 competitions. Her poise, playmaking, and leadership were evident even as a teenager, earning her respect from coaches and teammates alike.
In 2020, Georgia made the leap to the United States, accepting a scholarship to play NCAA Division I basketball at Virginia Tech. Over her four-year collegiate career, she emerged as one of the most electric point guards in the country, helping lead the Hokies to new heights, including:
- ACC Championship (2023)
- NCAA Final Four appearance (2023)
- All-ACC First Team Honours (multiple years)
- Bob Cousy Award Finalist – recognising the nation’s top point guard
- School records in assists and 3-point shooting
In 2024, Georgia transferred to the University of Kentucky for her fifth and final collegiate season, bringing her veteran leadership and elite playmaking to the Wildcats. She continued to shine in the SEC, guiding Kentucky through a strong campaign and solidifying her status as a top WNBA prospect. Her impact at both programs proved her ability to lead at the highest level and adapt her game against elite competition.
