The Ballarat Miners are thrilled to announce the re-signing of local star and fan favourite, Abbey Wehrung, on a two-year contract ahead of the 2025 Mitsubishi NBL1 South season.

In the 2024 NBL1 South season, Wehrung showcased her exceptional skills and leadership, averaging over 20.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game. Her outstanding offensive contributions were instrumental in leading the Ballarat Miners to the NBL1 South finals, marking a significant achievement for the team.

Although renowned for her offensive firepower, Wehrung’s defensive prowess is equally vital to her success. Last season, she was deservedly awarded the Miners’ Defensive Player of the Year award and the NBL1 South Defensive Player of the Year league award. These accolades highlight her ability to impact the game on both ends of the court and her focus on being a complete player.

Currently, Abbey is competing in the WNBL with the Bendigo Spirit, under the guidance of head coach Kennedy Kereama along with Miners teammates in the returning Micah Simpson and recruit Opal Bird. She has maintained impressive statistics, averaging 9.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game over 14 games, with a field goal percentage of 34.1%, three-point shooting at 40.8%, and free throw accuracy at 87.5%, seeing her as a leading contender for the “Sixth Woman of the Year” award for the season.

Expressing her enthusiasm about returning to the Miners, Wehrung stated, “I’m so excited to be back with the Miners for another two years. We have some unfinished business to get after and I just love where this program is headed. It’s a privilege for me to wear the Miners uniform and give back where I can to a club that has given me so much as a junior and also now as a senior. I love playing for Kennedy and absolutely treasure the environment and my Miners’ teammates.”

Head Coach Kennedy Kereama was excited about being able to have Abbey back on board, saying, “We are thrilled to announce Abbey Wehrung’s signing with the Ballarat Miners for the next two years. Coming off a fantastic WNBL season, Abbey is undoubtedly our most credentialed player, having represented Australia and played over 200 WNBL games. Her addition brings invaluable leadership, experience, scoring power, and defensive prowess to our team. Knowing that Abbey will be with us for the next two seasons provides a tremendous sense of stability and continuity for our program, and we are excited about the impact she will have on and off the court.”

Basketball Ballarat CEO, Neville Ivey from added, “Abbey’s re-signing showcases her loyalty and commitment to Ballarat. She serves as a role model for young aspiring female athletes in our community, and we are excited to see her continue to inspire and lead both on and off the court. Her defensive efforts last season were phenomenal, and it’s no surprise she was recognised at both club and league level for her contributions.”

Abbey joins Ella Gordon & Micah Simpson in returning for the upcoming season as well as new signing Opal Bird with more key signings to come in the coming weeks and months. The Ballarat Miners kick off their season at home against arch-rival Bendigo on March 29th.
