Wildcats take home the win in a down to the wire finish!

Wildcats A Grade Women managed to secure the win at the Mars Minerdome on Monday night, with the game coming right down to the wire. Wildcat’s Fanny Szittya notched a game-high 12-points, whilst Exies Acmy’s Jane Douglass was their top scorer with 11-points for the match. Wildcats managed to take home the win by three-points. (43-40

Opening the first playing period, there were many scoring opportunities, but both sides were not able to take advantage of this. Exies Acmy’s Jane Douglass was the first to get a score on the board, hitting two from two free-throws. Once both sides found their rhythm, the match became a basket for basket situation which continued on right down to the final siren. Exies Acmy took advantage of a few unsuccessful three-point field goal attempts by Wildcats, resulting in multiple fast breaks and scoring a few points in the paint. Exies Acmy ran away with a four-point lead as they prepared themselves for the second playing period (21-25).

Commencing play in the second playing period, Wildcat’s wasted no time, getting their first score onto the board, with Loren Phelps nailing a two-point field goal within the first 20 seconds. Exies’ Georgia Amoore managed to get a few quick points on the board, with a couple of quick points in the paint, as well as a successful three-point attempt.

Ultimately, with outstanding offense on both teams behalf, this lead to the game becoming a goal for goal situation. A time out called by Exies Acmy half way through the second half, saw them holding onto a one-point lead, 32-33. With Wildcats’ Rachel Grawich a strong asset in the game, a few quite paints were gained from post-plays. Exies’ Emily Brugman and Jane Douglass came out firing with outstanding offence, leading to the scores being tied 40-40 with three minutes to go in the final playing period.

Following a successful three-point attempt by Wildcats, this gave them a three-point lead over Exies Acmy. With very tight defensive pressure by both sides, neither teams were given any opportunities to get a single point on the board for the last minute and a half of the second half.

Both teams will enter their Finals campaign next week, with second place Exies Acmy taking on Celtic Tigers Green, 7:00pm Court 1, and fourth place Wildcats taking on Saints, 7:00pm Court 3.
