The Purpose

The Ballarat Basketball Foundation was established with the specific aim of forming a scholarship squad. The Foundation will assist members by way of providing individual athlete support, specialist coaching and development opportunities. At Basketball Ballarat we are concerned about the participation of our young people in sport and we are determined to ensure that every aspiring young athlete has an equal opportunity to participate at the highest level that they are capable of achieving.

Often we are in contact with a number of less fortunate families to whom we extend considerable assistance to ensure that their situation does not preclude a young boy or girl from achieving their dreams. It is via this Foundation that you can also assist Basketball Ballarat in providing assistance to the youth of our City.

Grants will also be awarded to assist squad members in the following areas:

  • sport related accommodation
  • travel
  • uniforms and fees
  • specialist coaching fees
  • support for athletes at State and National Championships
  • opportunity for interstate or overseas basketball experiences

Background

When the first game of Basketball was played in Ballarat on May 7th 1909 the participants had little idea of the foundation
they were laying for the future generations.

From these humble beginnings the Ballarat Basketball Association has grown to become one of Australia’s largest and most successful Basketball Associations producing some of the country’s most talented sportsmen and women. Olympians Robin Maher (Gull),Ray Borner and Alison Tranquilli (Cook) as well as NBL Coaches Brian Goorjian, Brendan Joyce and current National team mens coach Andrej Lemanis all started their stellar careers in the development programs of the Ballarat Basketball Association.

Junior development is an important part of the culture of any sporting association and the Ballarat Basketball Association sees this as one of its highest priorities. To ensure that the juniors of today become the champions of tomorrow the Association has established the Ballarat Basketball Foundation.

This Foundation has been established in conjunction with the Australian Sports. Foundation Ltd. (ASF) which provides tax deductible status for donations of $2 or over to the ASF. Donations must be made unconditionally to the ASF, however donors may nominate the   Ballarat Basketball Foundation - Junior Sport Development project or Regional Hubs fund as their preferred beneficiary.

All administrative costs of the Foundation will be met by the Ballarat Basketball Association allowing all ASF grants to be spent on the ASF approved project.
