Basketball Clubs from across the State will converge on Ballarat over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend in June when they hit the courts for the 2022 McDonald’s Ballarat Junior Basketball Tournament.
This annual tournament in its 49th year was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Victorian lockdowns however, 2022 is set to be one of the biggest Junior Tournaments that Ballarat has hosted with more than 260 teams entered.
Teams will be playing games across 20 courts in Ballarat including Selkirk Stadium, the Minerdome, Ballarat High, Loreto College, St Patricks College and Damascus
The Tournament is estimated to have a significant impact on the local Ballarat business community with the expected 3000 attendees generating over $4.9M in economic output in Ballarat.
Basketball Ballarat CEO Neville Ivey is supportive of the event as many local businesses continue to recover in 2022.
“This is a significant annual event for Ballarat which is vital for the local economy” Ivey said.
Ivey added “The event is iconic for Junior Basketball players and their families who in many instances will experience Ballarat as a destination for the first time.” Ivey said.
CEO of Commerce Ballarat, Jodie Gillett states “We love basketball!! “Our businesses cannot wait to welcome basketball teams and families this long weekend, we know sporting events like this provide critical stimulation of our economy”
The event attracts a range of teams across the Under 12, 14, 16 and 18 Divisions which creates a terrific family friendly environment with generations of players competing over the nearly 50 years.
