Basketball Ballarat will host the Bendigo Spirit and reigning WNBL Champions in the University of Canberra Capitals at the Ballarat Sports Events Centre on December 6th while supporting the City of Ballarat Active Women and Girls Program.

Bendigo Spirit are excited to take the WNBL to the recently opened Ballarat Sports Events

Centre. Bendigo Stadium Limited Chief Executive Office Nathan O’Neill was excited the Spirit are committed to broadening the game into Regional cities.

 

“This has been evident by already playing pre-season games in Sunbury, Echuca and Traralgon. Basketball Victoria Country has 106 Associations and playing a regular WNBL season game in Ballarat is a major step forward in expanding Women’s elite sport’ O’Neill ended with.

 

Ballarat Basketball CEO Peter Eddy was thrilled to be able to bring elite women’s basketball to Ballarat.

 

“Both Basketball Ballarat and the City of Ballarat, are passionate about Women In Sport, and are proud to support the ‘Active Women’s and Girls Program’ through this WNBL blockbuster game, against last year’s National Champions UC Capitals.” Eddy said.

 

The City of Ballarat Active Women and Girls Program was developed to create opportunities for female participation in sport, so all women and girls are given the best opportunity to participate in the sporting environment.

 

Mark Patterson Executive Manager of Sport and Active Living at the City of Ballarat said having elite women’s athletes performing in Ballarat promotes the great opportunities that are available to our young women and girls.

 

“One of the key objectives of our active women and girls strategy is to create cultures within clubs that are welcoming and respectful and promoting elite performing clubs in Ballarat showcases the key attributes of strong female friendly environments that our local clubs can learn from”

 

“Promoting high performing female athletes helps attract new female players into sport and these promotional activities increase awareness of the opportunities that are available for females to get active in Ballarat” Patterson ended with.

 

Abbey Wehrung is excited to be able to play in front of a local crowd in Ballarat.

 

“Living just 30 minutes from Ballarat, it’s so exciting to play in front of a home like crowd, which I’ve had a lot to do with in the past”

 

Abbey spent four season with Canberra before moving over to the Bendigo Spirit last season.

 

“I hope by playing WNBL in Ballarat we can inspire both Women and Girls to participate in an active sporting environment in the region”

 

Bendigo Spirit will be hoping to return to finals after four years out of favour but General Manager of Sport at Bendigo Stadium Limited Ben Harvey believes they have the right mix in WNBL20.

 

“With a new coaching group, and an energetic list, it is very exciting to see how far we can go this season” Harvey ended with.
