A strong second half from Drummo saw them run out eventual 40-6 victors over Celtic Tigers Red in the 10 Girls Yellow competition. Drummo were led by Bridgette O’Brien and Ella Litras who scored 16 and 14 points respectively, whilst Meg Stowe scored all 6 for Celtic Red.
Both teams went blow for blow early in the match as Meg Stowe opened up the game scoring three minutes into the match, only for Bridgette O’Brien to return the favour immediately. The pair traded baskets as the score was all tied up 4-4 early in the peace. Both coaches decided to play a full court press defence putting the opposition under severe pressure getting the ball down the court.
This is where Drummo Dragons began to turn the flow of the game into their favour. With multiple steals resulting in easy layups, they were able to run out the half on a 12-2 run, leading to a 16-6 lead going into the half time break.
Drummo’s Ella Litras did a great job of causing Celtic into numerous turnovers and then scoring baskets herself as well as getting all of her teammates involved. After a quick 8-0 to start the second half, Celtic Red were forced to call an early timeout in order to regroup. Although, they were unable to recover and eventually went scoreless throughout the second half.
Despite a strong effort by all Celtic Red players, Drummo used their height and length to advantage, both defensively and offensively gaining many second chance points through offensive rebounds. They went on to score 24 unanswered points in the second half and ended up running away with the match in convincing fashion.
After going undefeated throughout the season, Drummo will go into next weekend’s Grand Final against Phoenix Blue strong favourites after Phoenix Blue were able to pull out a 29-20 victory over third-placed Wildcats.
