The Ballarat Rush have finalised their roster for the 2016 South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) season with the signing of Kerryn Harrington.

Harrington is the fourth Bendigo Spirit Womens National Basketball League player to sign with the Rush for season 2016 behind local Molly Mathews, import Joy Burke and South Australian Ashleigh Spencer.

The four player have all said David Flint Rush Head Coach and Assistant Coach at the Bendigo Spirit was an influencing factor on them coming to Ballarat.

Harrington who grew up in Bendigo decided to join the Rush for 2016 stating “Dave put a very good case to me, they have a great program which I believe will improve my game”.

Harrington although only 23 years old will bring experience and leadership to the Rush having played with Bendigo Spirit, Adelaide Lightning and Bulleen Boomers (now known as Melbourne Boomers) in the WNBL.

Harrington also spent time at the Australian Institute of Sport and played for the u/19 Australian team at the 2011 FIBA World Championships.

Flint is very excited about his team this year “Isn’t it great that we can have a team predominantly made up of country Victorian players.”

Flint continued “Kerryn is a tremendous addition to our Rush group and to sign such a quality player and person such as Kerryn Harrington only a month out from the start of the SEABL season is pleasing.”

Kerryn joined the Spirit after the SEABL season with the Braves and a previous stint with Adelaide in the WNBL.  Flinted commented “Kerryn is coming off a breakthrough season with the Bendigo Spirit and I certainly will try to make her a better player for when that season recommences later this year”

When asked what Harrington will bring to the team Flint’s response was “There is not much Kerryn can’t do, she is a quality defender, is a great shooter and can run the team from either guard position not to mention her leadership qualities”

Flint added “I can’t wait to see how well Kerryn teams up with Abbey Wehrung in the back court as those two players should really complement one another and also make all the other players on the court better”

Wehrung will return to Ballarat next week after a short family holiday in the United States and Joy will join the team the following week before the season starts.

Elite Teams Administrator Melissa Thomas said “The Rush will have two weeks to train as a full squad before round one, but I am sure that Dave can get the girls working well together to take on Bendigo.”

The Rush will play a preseason game in Frankston on Sunday March 20 before their season tips off on Friday April 1st at 6pm at the MARS®MINERDOME.
